Opening It Up

Open-source technologies have jump-started web design for tens of millions of users.

This may be your first encounter with the term "open-source." Anyone interested in websites and Internet marketing should learn about it, fast. It describes a noncommercial alternate universe in which software is written collaboratively and shared freely.

People are completely free to use a program, tweak it and pass along the new and improved version. Think of it as community property. We believe "freeware" is the best way to build a website today.

Community software, really nothing new. The famed Linux operating system was an early example. Better than any operating system ever made by Microsoft. And free. The web server hosting this site uses Linux. That's a big part of why we pay $120 a year, not $120 a month.

The database program which organizes all our HTML files is called MySql. Likewise free. And, again, better than Microsoft's version that costs up to $20K for enterprise-level use. Similar examples abound everywhere in the software world, but the Internet is the hottest scene of all. In web development, community software has made exponential gains. We know that cumulative market share is huge, perhaps dominant. Precise figures don't exist, because production and distribution are so decentralized.

This site was built with one of the world's most popular free software programs for web design - the Joomla content management system. Plugged into it: a variety of other programs for specific tasks. Most were free. In a few cases - mainly for extended tech support - we paid a licensing free. Never more than $100, though.

Versus the Commercial Model

If this is so wonderful, why haven't you heard about it until now? It's obscured by a gigantic cloud of slick advertising by Big Software. Microsoft, Apple and others bombard us with endlesss commercials to support a proprietary, immensely profitable business model: Develop new software in secret and closely license it so that every last penny in royalties can be extracted; then lock out any software add-ons they don't also own and license. The kids do play together a little nicer nowadays. But it's still fundamentally a royalty-extraction scheme, giving rise to some of the largest fortunes on the planet.

Open-source people see this as a sinister, greed-driven perversion of their dream of a free and open Internet for all. But instead of just stewing, they're quietly staging a counter-revolution. You can see its impact with your own eyes, every time somebody launches a new website. There's a good chance it will have been built with free Internet software like Joomla.

Maybe you recently got a quote on a new website. And the numbers made you spit up your coffee. The quote probably came from a developer who uses commercial, proprietary software licensed by Microsoft or another member of the Big Software corporate empire. You'll derive some brand comfort in being affiliated with their name.

But is brand comfort really worth the extra $10K?

"Thank you, thank you for everything you're doing for us."
"The guy before you, it was like dragging around a limp noodle. You nailed it on the first try."
"With your creativity and imagination, you set a new standard which is going to be very hard to match."
"Wow, that's an awful lot of image for a small company."
"I love that site, it's one of the best I've ever seen. In fact I think it might be the best."
"The thing is, it's not just the design - it's written so damn well!"
"Nothing we accomplished this year would have been possible without that website."
"Congratulations, it's beautiful, Jim, like everything you do."
"Jim, everybody knows that everything you touch turns to gold."
